Georgia opens investigation into Roblox over child safety and consumer protection concerns

Georgia – Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr is looking into Roblox, a popular online gaming and chat platform for kids and teens, to see if the company is breaking state consumer protection laws and putting youngsters in danger. The investigation comes after many reports that the site was involved in cases of child abuse and s*xual exploitation.

Earlier this year, police found two girls from Florida who had gone missing after talking to a 19-year-old stranger on Roblox. The defendant, who is from Nebraska, is now facing charges of kidnapping and other connected crimes.

In a different example from 2023, an adult allegedly pretended to be a child on Roblox’s chat capabilities and then forced a 12-year-old boy to send him s*xual photos. These events have made people more interested in how the platform protects children.

Carr said that online predators are increasingly leveraging digital spaces to target youngsters and stressed that keeping young users safe is still a major priority. His agency has sent a Civil Investigative Demand to Roblox asking for records and internal materials related to child safety. This is allowed by Georgia’s Fair Business Practices Act.

The information requested includes reports of abuse or safety violations involving Georgia users, documentation of harm done to children, communications about how well parental controls work, and records related to moderation systems, age-verification practices, and interactions between adults and children. The request also asks for information about crimes that have happened on the site and marketing materials that explain why it is good for young people.

Carr is doing this probe as part of a bigger effort to protect youngsters from online dangers. Earlier this month, his office got a Hart County man convicted of trafficking a 16-year-old girl after first finding her using social media apps. Around the same time, Carr joined a group of attorneys general from both parties who were pressing Congress to pass federal laws that would make safety tools for users under 17 stronger.

He has also kept defending Georgia’s Protecting Children on Social Media law and has pushed big companies like TikTok and Snapchat to include more parental controls. The Roblox investigation is the most recent step in a long-running effort to make the internet safer for kids.
