Alpharetta drivers urged to plan ahead during month-long road closure for interchange work

Alpharetta, Georgia – The intersection of Windward Concourse and McGinnis Ferry Road will be closed from November 5 to December 5 so that work can be done on the Georgia Department of Transportation’s SR 400 Interchange Improvement Project.

The closure is an important step in a big infrastructure project that aims to reduce traffic and make one of North Fulton County’s busiest roads safer. The new full diamond intersection at SR 400 and McGinnis Ferry Road continues to be constructed on by crews. This project has been in the works for a long time and is meant to make it easier to get between Forsyth and Fulton counties while also cutting down on congestion at Windward Parkway and McFarland Parkway.

Drivers are told to find other ways to get about and plan for extra travel time during the month-long closure. Officials advise drivers to be on the lookout for construction teams and changes in traffic patterns in the area.

When it’s done, the new intersection will have northbound and southbound auxiliary lanes on SR 400 that connect south to Windward Parkway and north to McFarland Parkway. It will also have a new bridge over McGinnis Ferry Road. The proposal also calls for expanding McGinnis Ferry Road to four lanes on the Fulton County side and six lanes on the Forsyth side. There will be curbs, gutters, and either five-foot sidewalks or a multi-use walkway.

The bridge design will allow for future managed lanes along SR 400, making sure that it can adapt to regional growth over the long run. More lanes for turning right and left will also be added to make traffic flow better in the area.

When the work is done, it should make traffic flow more efficiently, make it easier for pedestrians and cyclists to get around, and make driving in the Windward region safer for everyone, including residents and commuters.
