Community Development Week shines light on Fulton County programs shaping homes and neighborhoods

Fulton County, Georgia – As Fulton County marks National Community Development Week from April 6 through April 10, county leaders are highlighting the long reach of programs designed to strengthen neighborhoods, expand housing access and improve daily life for residents. The annual observance offers a closer look at how federal support is being used locally, with initiatives aimed at reducing poverty, improving infrastructure and opening more doors to stable homeownership.

At the center of that work is the Fulton County Department of Community Development, which was formally recognized during the April 1 meeting of the Board of Commissioners. The proclamation served as both a public acknowledgment of the department’s role and a reminder of the impact community-based investment can have over time. In the days surrounding the observance, the department is also sharing stories from residents whose lives have been affected by the services it helps deliver, putting a human face on programs that often operate behind the scenes.

Among the key efforts drawing attention this week are the Community Development Block Grant program and the Homeownership Program, both of which support Fulton County’s broader push for affordable housing and neighborhood stability. For prospective buyers, that work will continue later this month with a Homeownership Program workshop scheduled for April 22, offering guidance for those interested in taking their first steps toward purchasing a home.

“This recognition is a meaningful opportunity to recognize the vital role programs like the Community Development Block Grant play in strengthening Fulton County,” said Community Development Director Stanley Wilson.

“Every program supported by Community Development allow us to invest directly in projects and services that improve the lives of our residents, support local organizations, and promote equitable, inclusive growth.”

The scale of the county’s investment shows how long this work has been building. From 2003 through 2025, Fulton County received more than $70 million for community development projects. During that same period, Community Development also received more than $21 million in HOME funding, with portions directed toward several major housing-related needs.

That funding has helped first-time homebuyers through the Homeownership Program by offering down payment assistance and supporting efforts to expand the supply of affordable housing. It has also supported Tenant-Based Rental Assistance, housing development activities and a wide network of community support. Through its Community Services Program, the department provides funding to more than 100 community partners delivering additional services across the county.

Beyond housing, the department’s reach extends into youth leadership efforts, support for people experiencing homelessness, fair housing initiatives and home repair programs that help older residents remain safely in their homes as they age.

The week’s recognition is not just a celebration of past investment, but a window into how Fulton County is continuing to build more inclusive and resilient communities.
