From founding member to top leader: Deputy Chief Mike Carlson promoted to Dunwoody Police Chief

Dunwoody, Georgia – The City of Dunwoody is preparing for a leadership transition within its police department as Deputy Chief Mike Carlson has been promoted to Police Chief, succeeding Chief Billy Grogan, who is set to retire on June 1. Eric Linton, the city manager of Dunwoody, made this announcement while highlighting Carlson’s long history and admirable leadership within the department since its inception.

A Foundation of Leadership and Community Service

Deputy Chief Mike Carlson, one of the founding members of the Dunwoody Police Department, has significantly contributed to the department’s growth and community engagement efforts since joining as a sergeant in 2009. His commitment to fostering community relations led to the creation of pivotal programs such as the Citizen Police Academy, Neighborhood Watch, and Chaplain programs. Through a series of promotions reflecting his dedication and leadership, Carlson advanced to the position of Deputy Chief in 2021, managing the department’s daily operations with a focus on innovation, comprehensive training, and ensuring the welfare of Dunwoody’s residents and visitors.

Carlson expressed his commitment to continuing the legacy of Chief Grogan. “As Dunwoody’s next Police Chief, I will continue strengthening the partnership with our community, foster innovation, and provide the best training and equipment for our officers and staff. I promise to provide effective and compassionate law enforcement services to all who live, work, and visit this great city. As the men and women of the Dunwoody Police Department continue to build upon Chief Billy Grogan’s outstanding legacy, we wish him a happy and well-deserved retirement,” Carlson said.

A Distinguished Military and Law Enforcement Career

Carlson’s exemplary service extends beyond his civilian law enforcement career. Retiring as a captain with the Georgia National Guard in 2022, his military tenure included a deployment to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in 2014, earning him several commendations for his service and leadership.

Chief Grogan and Dunwoody Mayor Lynn Deutsch have both praised Carlson’s substantial contributions to the department and the Dunwoody community. His innovative approaches and deep understanding of community dynamics are anticipated to lead the department towards new successes.

Educational Excellence and Professional Development

Carlson’s academic achievements include a Bachelor’s degree in Organizational Leadership/Public Safety from Reinhardt University and a Master of Public Administration from Columbus State University. His extensive professional development includes graduation from the FBI National Academy and participation in the Georgia International Law Enforcement Exchange and the Senior Management Institute for Policing at the Police Executive Research Forum.

As Deputy Chief Carlson prepares to officially assume his new role in April, the city of Dunwoody looks forward to the continued excellence and leadership he will bring to the Police Chief position.
