Fulton County, Georgia – A phone call arriving just after a loved one is booked into jail can catch a family at its most vulnerable moment. Fulton County authorities say scammers are exploiting exactly that window, using names and custody details to make urgent demands for money sound convincing.
The Fulton County Sheriff’s Office is warning families and emergency contacts of people recently booked into the Fulton County Jail about an active scam in which callers pose as bail bondsmen or jail officials. The calls have reportedly occurred before families receive legitimate contact from the jail, a bonding agency or a victim advocate.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, scammers may identify the person in custody by name and claim to know details about the case or detention status. They then pressure the recipient to send money immediately, sometimes requesting several partial payments through cash apps or other payment methods that can be difficult to trace.
The stories used to create urgency can vary. Callers may claim there is an outbreak or medical problem inside the jail, say the person needs to be moved or released for safety reasons, or threaten additional charges connected to supposed missed court appearances. In some cases, the calls continue even after the recipient questions the story or says police will be contacted.
Authorities are urging residents not to send money based on an unsolicited call. Legitimate jail staff and bonding companies will not pressure families to make immediate payments through cash apps, gift cards or wire transfers.
Instead, families should independently verify a person’s custody and bond information through the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office website at www.fcsoga.org. Anyone contacting a bonding company should look up the agency’s phone number independently rather than using a number supplied by the caller.

If a suspicious caller becomes aggressive or repeatedly calls back, residents are advised to stop engaging, block the number and record the date, time and details of the contact.

Families concerned about the well-being of someone in custody can also request a Resident Welfare Check through the official “Fulton Co. Sheriff’s Office GA” mobile app. After downloading the app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store, users can select “Inmate Welfare Check,” submit the requested information and receive follow-up from appropriate staff.
