Fulton County recommends significant property tax hike, triggering required public hearings

Fulton County, Georgia – The Fulton County Board of Commissioners has recommended raising property taxes for the next year, which has gotten a lot of attention in the community. The board revealed its intention to raise the 2025 General Fund property taxes by 12.49 percent over the calculated rollback millage rate.

The Board of Tax Assessors looks at property values in Fulton County every year to find out what their current fair market value is. The law says that this procedure, called reassessment, must happen if recent property sales show that the value of the property is going up. The digest, which is the entire taxable value of property in the county, must be reassessed when these reassessments are done.

Georgia state law says that a rollback millage rate must be calculated after the digest is updated. If property values don’t change during reassessment, this rate should bring in the same amount of property tax money as last year. But the Fulton County Board of Commissioners wants to adopt a millage rate that is higher than this rollback amount.

Georgia law says that the Board must hold three public hearings before adopting the new rate because it is higher than the rollback rate. Residents can ask questions, share their concerns, and provide their thoughts regarding the proposed tax hike at these hearings. County officials highlight how important it is for people to come to these sessions and give their opinions. They say that feedback from the community is a big component of the decision-making process.

The public hearings that are planned will be held at the Government Center Assembly Hall, which is at 141 Pryor Street in Atlanta. On Wednesday, July 9, 2025, at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., the first two hearings will take place. The third meeting will take place on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, at 10 a.m. All hearings will also be available by video conferencing on the Fulton County website and Zoom to make sure everyone can see them.

County leaders encourage all interested individuals to either go to the hearings in person or take part online. You can find the links for the virtual sessions on the official Fulton County government website or by going straight to the Zoom registration page.
