Fulton County residents have limited time left to secure homestead exemption that could lower this year’s tax bill

Fulton County, Georgia – Fulton County homeowners still have time to take advantage of a property tax benefit that could significantly lower their bills this year, but the window is closing quickly.

The deadline to apply for a homestead exemption is Wednesday, April 1, and applications submitted by that date will apply to the current year’s property tax statement.

Homestead exemptions are designed to reduce the taxable value of a primary residence, giving homeowners meaningful relief from rising property taxes. Fulton County, along with its cities and local school districts, offers several types of exemptions.

Each program is tailored to different circumstances, with eligibility sometimes based on age, income level, disability status, or military service. At the most basic level, any homeowner who occupies their property as a primary residence may qualify for a standard homestead exemption.

Residents only need to complete a single application to be considered for available exemptions. However, certain specialized exemptions may require supporting documents to confirm eligibility. Once an application is submitted, the Fulton County Board of Assessors reviews the information and determines which exemption provides the greatest benefit for the homeowner.

Officials say the process is designed to ensure applicants automatically receive the most advantageous option available to them.

This year also brings additional opportunities for tax relief. Two new exemptions have been introduced—one serving homeowners within the Fulton County School District and another for those living in the Atlanta Public Schools district.

For residents who already have a basic homestead exemption in place, the assessors’ office will automatically apply one of the new exemptions if the homeowner meets the eligibility requirements.

County officials encourage homeowners who have not yet applied to act before the deadline arrives. Applications can be completed online through the Fulton County Board of Assessors website or submitted in person at any of the six assessor offices located throughout the county.

Detailed information about each exemption program, including qualification requirements and necessary documentation, is available on the assessors’ website.

For many residents, taking a few minutes to apply could translate into noticeable savings when property tax bills arrive later this year.
