Residents in Alpharetta invited to register for hazardous waste collection event in early May

Alpharetta, Georgia – Alpharetta residents will soon have a dedicated chance to clear out some of the most difficult items to keep around the house, from leftover paint to old gasoline, through a one-day collection event designed to make disposal safer and simpler.

The City of Alpharetta is offering household hazardous waste and paint recycling or disposal on Saturday, May 2, 2026, but the event is only open to people who live within Alpharetta city limits and complete the required registration in advance.

City officials said participation is limited, and the collection is not available to businesses.

For households with cans of paint stacked in the garage, aging garden chemicals tucked away on a shelf, or automotive fluids that have long outlived their usefulness, the event creates a controlled way to remove those items without sending them into regular trash streams.

Accepted materials are expected to include paint and paint-related substances, old gasoline, home, auto and garden chemicals, poisons, and other similar household materials. Residents are also being told to consult the registration form for a fuller list of acceptable items.

This year’s event also adds a few newer accepted materials. Household fire extinguishers are now on the list, with a limit of 15. Small 16-ounce household propane cylinders will also be accepted, though larger cylinders and tanks will not.

There is no fee for approved items, but registration is mandatory.

The deadline to sign up is Wednesday, April 29, 2026. Once approved, residents will receive a confirmation email and must bring that confirmation with them on collection day. Items will only be accepted on May 2 between 8:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., with no exceptions.

The city is also asking participants to prepare carefully before arriving. Materials should be transported safely, kept in their original containers, and separated as much as possible. At the site, residents will be instructed to stay inside their vehicles while technicians unload the items. That process is meant to keep traffic moving and reduce handling risks for the public.

The event reflects a practical but important side of city service: helping residents dispose of potentially dangerous materials in a way that protects both neighborhoods and the wider environment. Products that seem harmless when forgotten in a basement or shed can become a serious problem when they leak, spill, or are thrown away improperly.

For residents sorting through glass containers as part of their spring cleanup, the city noted that Alpharetta Public Works also maintains a permanent glass recycling drop-off in the front parking lot at 1790 Hembree Road. Only clean food and beverage glass containers are accepted there.
