Winter weather advisory in Atlanta: Some schools close, other switch to online learning, warming shelter to be opened

Atlanta, Georgia – A weather warning is issued for Monday night and Tuesday morning due to winter conditions.

The northern part of metro Atlanta, including areas like Fulton, Cobb, Douglas, and Cherokee counties, as well as most of northwest Georgia, will be under a winter weather advisory until Tuesday noon. Expect cold rain and possibly icy roads, which might make driving risky on Tuesday morning.

The following schools in Georgia will be closed on January 16, 2024:

  • Atlanta Public Schools
  • Bartow County Schools
  • Cherokee County Schools
  • Cobb County School District
  • Douglas County Schools
  • Gordon County Schools
  • Marietta City Schools

These schools will switch to online learning on January 16, 2024:

  • Decatur City Schools
  • Paulding County School District
  • Pickens County Schools
  • Polk County School District

Warming shelter to be opened on Tuesday, January 16

The City of Atlanta announced on social media that A warming center will open on Tuesday, January 16. Per their posting on X, formerly Twitter, the warming center will open on Tuesday at 8:00 a.m. and will be operational until Thursday, January 18 at 10:00 a.m.

The warming center will be located at Central Park Rec Center (400 Merritts Ave NE). Transportation will be provided from the Gateway Center (275 Pryor St SW), with return transportation upon deactivation.
