Google partners with Atlanta, donates $300,000, to cut energy costs and grow skilled labor in high-need neighborhoods

Atlanta, Georgia – The City of Atlanta received a major financial boost for its WeatheRISE ATL program, which marks a notable turning point in improving the living conditions of its citizens. The project meant to increase residential energy efficiency and offer workforce training in the city has been funded by Google for $300,000. Mayor Andre Dickens and municipal officials praised this donation, which they said will hasten the program’s influence in Atlanta’s most energy-cost stressed areas.

Launched in 2024 by the Mayor’s Office of Sustainability and Resilience, WeatheRISE ATL seeks at owner-occupied, single-family houses for improvements that boost general home health and energy efficiency. These actions are particularly aimed at areas marked by unusually high energy costs. Google’s contribution will help to increase these essential services, therefore directly helping the local community.

Detailing the growth, officials highlighted various important areas where the money would be directed. Including attic insulation and necessary repairs guaranteeing safety and comfort for occupants, a major part of the donation will be used to improve the structural and energy conservation qualities of homes. This is all included in a larger campaign to lower energy prices for 100 homes, each getting over $1,000 to support required home renovations for weatherization eligibility.

Furthermore, the money goes beyond only infrastructural upgrades. It covers plans to expand the local energy labor. Supported by BPI certificates from Southface, a prominent sustainability NGO, around 15 trainees will acquire skills in building science and energy solutions like HVAC systems and insulation installation. The program guarantees a well-rounded vocational training environment by including pay for in-field training and personal safety equipment.

Google is also working on small company development in the contractor industry. By including innovative technology and increasing their teams to include at least one trainee from the workforce development program, the initiative helps local contractors and promotes business expansion as well as employment.

This project is included in Google’s larger dedication to assist sustainable energy solutions, workforce development, and economic prosperity. Monique Picou, Google’s Global Vice President of Cloud Supply Chain & Operations and Atlanta Site Lead, underlined the two advantages of this assistance.

“Google is proud to support the City of Atlanta’s efforts to enhance energy affordability for residents and boost our local workforce,” Picou said. “This support reflects our commitment to create meaningful opportunities across Atlanta for the skilled professionals who will build a more sustainable future for our city—a win-win for our community and growing local economy.”
