Atlanta City Council approves new workplace protections for city employees

Atlanta, Georgia – Under Mayor Andre Dickens, the City of Atlanta has published its first-ever Employee Bill of Protection of Rights in a major step toward creating an ethical and open workplace. Together with comprehensive guidance on engaging in independent administrative investigations, this project seeks to clarify and uphold the rights of city staff members while preserving a high degree of public service integrity.

Mayor Dickens, emphasizing the importance of ethical governance, highlighted the Bill of Rights as a cornerstone of his administration’s commitment to fairness and accountability.

“Consistent with my fourth pillar of Ethical and Effective government, the creation of the Bill of Rights will help all employees understand their rights within the City,” said Mayor Andre Dickens in a news release. “As an advocate for—and someone who worked directly on—both the creation of the Office of Inspector General and the City’s Department of Labor, the accompanying guide balances transparency and accountability for the City’s public servants, while making clear their rights and responsibilities.”

Recent legislation and Taskforce on Ethical Government’s suggestions have helped to produce the Employee Bill of Rights. It offers the first set of guidelines created by Mayor Dickens’s government meant to direct contacts with the offices of ethics and the Inspector General. Approved by the City Council, this project has been developed with an eye toward strengthening the city’s commitment to integrity and staff empowerment.

The paper outlines Employee Responsibilities, Standards, and Rights, therefore offering clear guidance on employee rights and the safeguards against which they are protected. By laying out these policies, the city hopes to build a culture of responsibility and trust, therefore guaranteeing consistency and openness among all departments.

This handbook is a complete tool for staff members since it clarifies the goals of several offices and their different but cooperative purposes.

This project marks a major move forward to Atlanta city government being as open and responsible as it can be. It also gives every staff member confidence as the City of Atlanta values and supports them.
