Fulton County exhibit turns gold and diamonds into symbols of ancestry instead of wealth

Fulton County, Georgia – Gold and diamonds are usually associated with wealth, luxury and status. But in a new Fulton County art exhibition, these precious materials carry a much deeper meaning, one tied to identity, family history and the value people inherit from generations before them.

That message sits at the center of We Come From Gold & Diamonds, an upcoming exhibition in Atlanta that invites visitors to look beyond material wealth and consider the cultural treasures that shape who they are.

The Fulton County Department of Arts & Culture is presenting the solo exhibition by contemporary artist Kevin “WAK” Williams at the Emma Darnell Aviation Museum and Conference Center. The exhibition opens November 7 and continues through December 12, 2026, offering the public free access to artwork exploring African heritage, ancestry and personal identity.

Rather than treating gold and diamonds simply as expensive possessions, Williams uses them as symbols of something that cannot be measured by money. His work connects these images with cultural legacy, resilience, royalty and self-worth, encouraging viewers to recognize the value rooted in their own histories.

The exhibition also places particular emphasis on ancestry and the strength carried across generations. Through this approach, the artist presents cultural heritage as a source of dignity and identity, while challenging traditional ideas about what makes someone valuable.

Visitors will have several opportunities to experience the exhibition and engage with its themes.

An opening reception is scheduled for Saturday, November 7, from 6 to 9 p.m. The event will mark the public introduction of the exhibition at the museum and conference center, located at 3900 Aviation Circle NW in Atlanta.

A second event, an artist talk featuring Williams, is scheduled for Saturday, December 5, from 1 to 3 p.m. That gathering will provide another opportunity for visitors to explore the ideas behind the artwork and its focus on heritage and cultural identity.

The exhibition will remain available during regular gallery hours throughout its run. Visitors can attend Tuesday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., or on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The gallery will be closed on holidays observed by Fulton County.

Admission is free, making the exhibition accessible to residents and visitors interested in contemporary art, African cultural heritage and the connections between ancestry and personal worth.

The exhibition closes December 12, leaving visitors more than a month to explore a simple but powerful idea: some of the greatest treasures people possess are not things they own, but the histories and identities they carry.
