Albany chamber CEO Bárbara Rivera Holmes set to lead Georgia’s Department of Labor with focus on workforce innovation and development

Atlanta, Georgia – Governor Brian P. Kemp has appointed Bárbara Rivera Holmes the next Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Labor in what appears to be an important shift within the state government. Made earlier this week, Holmes is scheduled to formally assume office on April 4th. After Bruce Thompson passed tragically last November, she will be finishing the term originally won by him in 2022.

Governor Kemp expressed his confidence and pride in this appointment during the announcement.

“Marty and I are proud to make this historic announcement and to congratulate Bárbara Rivera Holmes on her new leadership role that will benefit our entire state,” Kemp remarked.

Emphasizing Holmes’s broad expertise in education and economic development, he applauded her commitment and track record of helping the Dougherty County and surrounding areas.

Holmes currently holds the positions of president and CEO of the Albany Area Chamber of Commerce, as well as CEO of the Albany Area Chamber Foundation. These groups have under her direction focused on creating economic possibilities, improving community links, and clearing the path for Albany’s future development. They have accomplished this by tackling the toughest problems facing companies, working with legislators to support intelligent legislation, and working with local businesses and colleges to produce a modern, flexible workforce.

Her past positions include Vice President of the Albany-Dougherty Economic Development Commission (ADEDC), where she helped to create the branding, marketing plans, and effective business retention and expansion program of the entity. For Albany-Dougherty County, this initiative was essential in generating capital investment and employment.

Holmes had a lengthy career in journalism as a senior business reporter at The Albany Herald before joining the ADEDC. Her work in journalism earned her four Georgia Associated Press awards for excellence.

When former Governor Nathan Deal named her to the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia in 2018, her public service credentials were reinforced. She also co- led the Georgia Innovates Task Force, assigned to create the state’s innovative plan. More recently, Governor Kemp assigned her to the House Rural Development Council.

Originally from San Juan, Puerto Rico, Holmes offers an array of experiences to her new post. She earned double majors in Journalism and Spanish from Florida Southern College and speaks Spanish fluently. She lives in Albany along with her daughter and husband, David.

This appointment marks a continuation of Holmes’ commitment to public service and economic development, with high expectations from both the Governor and the state’s residents for her to drive forward significant labor and employment initiatives.
