Resurfacing leads April transportation awards as Georgia funds 28 road projects

Georgia – Georgia’s spring roadwork plans gained a major boost in April, as the Georgia Department of Transportation approved 28 projects worth about $107.2 million during its monthly State Transportation Board meeting.

The contracts, awarded May 1, 2026, went to the lowest qualified bidders after bids for Design-Bid-Build projects were received on April 17. Together, the awards cover resurfacing, construction, bridge rehabilitation and safety work across several parts of the state, adding another large round of investment to Georgia DOT’s Fiscal Year 2026 program.

Resurfacing took the largest share of the April funding. Georgia DOT awarded 20 resurfacing contracts totaling approximately $66.5 million, or 62 percent of all funds awarded for the month. The biggest of those projects is in Gwinnett County, where about $6.5 million will go toward 6.25 miles of milling, inlay and plant mix resurfacing on State Route 141. The work is planned from south of Winters Chapel Road to the north end of the bridge over the Chattahoochee River at milepost 6.251.

Construction projects formed the second-largest category. Four construction contracts totaled about $37.1 million, representing 34 percent of April’s awards. The largest single construction contract, valued at approximately $26.8 million, calls for 1.47 miles of widening and reconstruction on SR 14 Spur in Troup County. That work will begin south of SR 109 and continue to US 29/SR 14.

Bridge work also received funding. Georgia DOT awarded two bridge rehabilitation contracts worth about $2.8 million, or 3 percent of the April total. The largest, at roughly $2 million, focuses on bridge rehabilitation on I-20/SR 402 over Fairfield Place and over Lawton Street in Fulton County.

The remaining 1 percent went toward safety improvements. Two safety contracts totaled approximately $757,000, led by a $535,000 project for signing and pavement marking upgrades on various county roads in Decatur County.

Georgia DOT also issued a supplemental award announcement covering previously deferred projects that have now been awarded. Those contracts were awarded to the lowest qualified bidder on May 12.

With the April awards included, Georgia DOT’s total construction contracts for Fiscal Year 2026 have reached approximately $2.2 billion. The fiscal year began July 1, 2025, and will end June 30, 2026. That total includes Transportation Investment Act, Design-Bid-Build and locally administered projects.

Contractors and consultants, including Disadvantaged Business Enterprises, registered small businesses and veteran-owned small businesses, must prequalify with Georgia DOT before bidding on projects or performing work. More information is available through Georgia DOT’s DBE program page.
