Stonecrest and Decatur drivers to prepare for detours during the 8-month-long Miller Road bridge renovation

Decatur, Georgia – As the Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) announces the closing of the Miller Road bridge over Interstate 20, Stonecrest and Decatur residents and commuters are encouraged to get ready for significant traffic rerouting. Starting Tuesday, January 7, 2025, this major detour is a part of ongoing development for the I-285/I-20 East Interchange project.

Depending on the state of the weather, the bridge renovation is set for eight months and will require complete overpass closure. All traffic will be diverted over an off-site detour route during this time. To navigate the restricted portion and reach communities on either side of the overpass, drivers will utilize Panola Industrial Boulevard, Panola Road, and Minola Drive. Access to neighborhood businesses, private driveways, and public services will remain open despite the closure.

Drivers are advised to plan extra travel time since those who are used to driving throughout this region may expect some delays from the diversion. The Georgia DOT underlines the importance of driving cautiously around the detour area and adhering to the detour signage, which will guide motorists along the alternative routes.

Rebuilding the system-to-system ramps at the interchange and adding extra lanes to enable better transitions between I-20 and I-285 aims to improve traffic flow and safety. Along I-20 east of the intersection and I-285 north of the interchange, these enhancements include a mix of collector-distributor lanes, connecting lanes, and auxiliary lanes.

Using real-time traffic resources including the 511GA app, visiting the 511 ga.org website, or downloading the Georgia 511 mobile app, drivers are advised to keep informed about current traffic conditions and any updates on the construction progress. Remaining updated will help to guarantee a better commute in case there are schedule adjustments brought about by weather or other events.

Drivers should also expect some delays, slow down in the work zones, and remain alert to guarantee safety for all workers and fellow commuters over this long building period. As the Georgia DOT seeks to enhance the state’s transportation system, the public’s patience and cooperation are highly valued.
