Tech classes and mindfulness workshops during May to help Fulton County seniors stay connected and empowered

Fulton County, Georgia – By declaring May to be Older Americans Month, the Fulton County Board of Commissioners will once again recognize the community’s senior citizens at its next meeting on Wednesday, May 7, 2025. The goal of this year’s theme, “Flip the Script on Aging,” is to change the way we think about becoming older. This annual event provides an opportunity to honor the vitality, knowledge, and commitment that seniors bring to communities around the county.

The theme of “Flip the Script on Aging” exhorts everyone to let go of antiquated ideas about aging. It emphasizes resiliency, inventiveness, and continuous contributions rather than getaways and relaxation. Fulton County Chief Operating Officer Dr. Pamela Roshell highlights that this celebration is more than a ceremonial event.

“Older Americans Month provides an invaluable opportunity for Fulton County to celebrate the contributions of older adults in our community,” said Dr. Pamela Roshell. “The Fulton County Department of Senior Services remains committed to fostering a positive approach to aging, highlighting the many ways our seniors continue to stay active, engaged, and connected.”

Older Americans Month kicked out on Thursday, May 1, 2025, and Senior Services will launch a variety of online and in-person events during the next few weeks. The Dogwood Center’s Senior Olympics, where competitors test their coordination, speed, and balance in friendly competition, is arguably the most exciting of them.

While the Field Day will feature demonstrations of fitness courses, healthy culinary workshops, and informational booths on managing chronic conditions, the OAM Walk for Wellness will allow walkers of all abilities to enjoy local parks at a more leisurely pace.

Social ties and the arts also take prominent stage. For a display of artistic expression, An Evening of the Arts will pair senior talent with local musicians and visual artists. Not to be outdone, the Sneaker Ball will combine a fancy dress code with some moderate exercise, urging guests to trade in their heels for shoes and dance the night away. The Hapeville Concert, where a selection of bands will play both new and classic songs on an outdoor stage, is a must-see for music enthusiasts.

Mother’s Day brunches at various senior facilities, featuring live music and craft stations for grandchildren, are family-friendly events. Technology will never be a barrier between elders and their communities thanks to virtual courses that will cover everything from smartphone tutorials to memory exercises and meditation throughout the month.

“This May, as we host 35 celebratory events throughout our senior facilities and centers across Fulton County, we proudly embrace the 2025 theme, “Flip the Script on Aging,” stated Ladisa Onyiliogwu, Director. “Our older adults are demonstrating resilience, creativity, and purpose at every stage of life. Whether through fitness, wellness initiatives, or arts and culture, these events showcase the continued value, strength, and vitality of our senior community.”
