Big Creek Water Reclamation Facility project in Fulton County recognized nationally for engineering excellence and environmental impact

Fulton County, Georgia – A major infrastructure project in Fulton County is drawing national attention for its innovative design and environmental impact.

The Big Creek Water Reclamation Facility, one of the county’s most significant public works investments, has been recognized by the American Academy of Environmental Engineers & Scientists for excellence in engineering and science design.

Leaders with the Fulton County Department of Public Works received word of the honor in late February. The prestigious organization cited the facility’s design as a standout example of modern environmental engineering.

Officials will learn the exact level of the award during a formal ceremony scheduled for April in Washington, D.C., where the recognition will be presented at an awards luncheon.

The distinction highlights Fulton County’s commitment to building advanced infrastructure that protects the environment while supporting the needs of a growing population.

Public Works officials say the Big Creek facility reflects years of careful planning and investment aimed at creating a cutting-edge wastewater treatment system capable of serving residents efficiently and responsibly.

“When Fulton County initially began planning to build Big Creek, the goal was to create a state-of-the art facility with the best technology,” said Public Works Director David Clark.

He added that the project represents the county’s largest infrastructure investment to date and plays a vital role in supporting communities throughout the region.

The recognition from the American Academy of Environmental Engineers & Scientists is the latest in a growing list of honors for the project. The Big Creek Water Reclamation Facility has already earned multiple awards from national and state organizations that recognize innovation in engineering, construction, and infrastructure design.

Among the national accolades are distinctions from the Association of General Contractors, the Design-Build Institute of America, the Environmental Business Journal, and the Independent Electrical Contractors. Each organization highlighted different aspects of the project, from construction excellence to technical achievement.

The facility has also been celebrated at the state level. Engineering and construction groups in Georgia—including the American Council of Engineering Companies of Georgia, the American Society of Civil Engineers, and the American Concrete Institute, have each honored the project for its contribution to infrastructure development.

For Fulton County officials and the team behind the facility, the growing list of awards reflects more than recognition from industry leaders. It also underscores the dedication of the engineers, operators, and public works professionals who maintain the facility and work to uphold high standards of environmental stewardship every day.
