Alpharetta encourages residents to recycle Christmas trees at the Bring One for The Chipper event

Alpharetta, Georgia – The City of Alpharetta is calling on residents to continue a cherished tradition by participating in the annual Bring One for The Chipper event. On Saturday, January 4th, residents are invited to recycle their natural Christmas trees in order to support environmental sustainability and support to beautify public areas. The event will take place in the Home Depot parking lot on 5300 Windward Parkway from 9:00 AM till 3:00 PM.

Since its founding 34 years ago, Bring One for The Chipper has been instrumental in Georgia’s environmental preservation initiatives by encouraging the recycling of over 6 million Christmas trees. By turning donated trees into mulch for use in several public projects like playgrounds, parks, and local government beautification initiatives, the city hopes to further develop this legacy this year.

The mulching procedure will be handled by Davey Tree Experts, thus guaranteeing optimal recycling of the trees. In addition to helping community enhancement projects, those who donate their Christmas trees will have an opportunity to bring part of the mulch generated home. Those who want mulch can complete a request form on the City of Alpharetta website.

Participants are also encouraged to bring any unused Christmas tree lights for recycling. This project is a part of Alpharetta’s attempt to provide complete recycling options and cut waste during the holidays.

Although usually disregarded, natural Christmas trees have a major environmental impact. Natural trees improve the environment by collecting carbon dioxide, producing oxygen, and providing essential habitats for wildlife unlike their synthetic counterparts.

The National Christmas Tree Association notes that about 350 million Christmas trees are grown on American farms every year, which stabilize ground and protect water supplies. Moreover, for every tree harvested, one to three seedlings are planted in its place, demonstrating the sustainability of this natural resource.

Through taking part in the recycling event, neighbors help not only neighborhood environmental projects but also the larger, state-wide effort headed by the Keep Georgia Beautiful Foundation and other sponsors including The Home Depot, Georgia Forestry Commission, and many local organizations including the Young Men’s Service League and the Alpharetta Rotary Club.

This project also corresponds with other creative recycling practices, such as building fish habitats in lakes using discarded Christmas trees, therefore highlighting the adaptability and environmental advantages of natural tree use.
