Atlanta, Georgia – As average fuel costs in Georgia continue their down trend, drivers are finding a little more to smile about at the gas stations. The cost of a gallon of standard unleaded gasoline this week has dropped to $2.97, a nine-cent decline from last week and offers notable savings over past months and last year.
From last month’s costs, this current average shows a 27-cent decrease; from the same period last year, it shows a significant 47-cent decline. AAA-The Auto Club Group estimates that for a normal fill-up, the savings come to roughly $4.05 less than a month ago.
AAA spokesman Montrae Waiters emphasized the importance of the price drop.
“Here in Georgia, we haven’t seen gas dip below 3 bucks since January 24th when it hit $2.98,” Waiters said. “Driven by tepid demand and crude oil prices below $70, Georgia drivers continue to find relief at the pumps.”
The falling prices are especially notable in several metropolitan areas across the state. Though Hinesville-Fort Stewart ($3.10), Savannah ($3.08), and Atlanta ($3.00) still have the highest gas prices, other places are witnessing even more notable drops. The Augusta-Aiken area is currently at $2.82 per gallon, Dalton at $2.81, and the combined areas of Catoosa, Dade, and Walker counties are reporting the lowest at $2.71.
AAA notes that the main causes of the ongoing decline in pump costs are lower demand and the drop in crude oil prices; so, if these trends continue, Georgia drivers could keep benefiting at the pump. For locals, this is wonderful news; it could also affect economic decisions and travel patterns in the next months.
