U.S. Department of Transportation allocates $1.7 million for bridge planning in Georgia and South Carolina

Georgia – Significant government financing is slated for a bridge linking Georgia and South Carolina to assess future repairs and replacements, in the name of improving infrastructure dependability and safety. Announced by the U.S. Department of Transportation, the $1.7 million grant will help the bridge, which forms part of a vital trade corridor alongside Interstate 85.

Under the Bridge Investment Program, this funded project seeks to solve the worsening state of bridges all around. Together with the South Carolina Department of Transportation, the Georgia Department of Transportation has received around $1.68 million. These money are meant for preliminary planning and evaluation of six bridges across the interstate corridor, which have been found to be either in bad or fair condition or inadequate to satisfy present and future transportation needs.

Pete Buttigieg, the U.S. Transportation Secretary, underlined the significance of these subsidies, which constitute part of larger initiatives under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

“The Bridge Investment Program Planning grants we’re announcing today will provide much-needed resources to communities nationwide so they can complete the plans and studies required to move forward with important bridge projects.” Buttigieg stated.

The sponsored initiative goes beyond simple evaluation in scope. It entails researching two main interchanges and weighing the effects of possible lane expansions, more truck parking lots, and the building of a shared-use route. These thorough investigations seek to ascertain if complete replacements or necessary repairs would be feasible to guarantee that the bridges satisfy criteria of safety and capacity.

Federal Highway Administrator Shailen Bhatt underlined the strategic relevance of such expenditures.

“The planning grant announced today will help Georgia prepare critical bridge projects for restoration or replacement before they fall into a state of disrepair,” Federal Highway Administrator Shailen Bhatt said. “By making historic investments in bridge projects that serve as a vital transportation link in communities nationwide, the Biden-Harris administration is supporting local economies, strengthening supply chains, and promoting resilience and safety in transportation.”

The initiative will center about 2.5 miles of the I-85 corridor at the Georgia-South Carolina border. Widening shoulders, providing emergency pull-off places, improving bridge railings, and rectifying poor geometrical curves and alignments are among suggested safety improvements. These upgrades seek to greatly increase the dependability and efficiency of the corridor therefore guaranteeing better transit for thousands of daily commuters and cargo operators.
