Fulton Industrial Boulevard poised for advanced manufacturing and logistics expansion after five properties demolished

Atlanta, Georgia – On February 27, Fulton County made a big stride forward in its Renew the District project. Leaders from the county came together in Southwest Atlanta to watch the old Knights Inn come down. The demolition of the long-vacant facility at 4330 Fulton Industrial Boulevard marks the end of a larger effort to clear five old hotel sites along the corridor that had been unused for years.

County Chairman Robb Pitts was there with other political officials and community leaders. He said the event was more than just a symbol. He noted that taking down the building is a step forward in getting rid of problems that have been holding the neighborhood back for years. Things that used to be signs of decline are now set up to be places for growth.

The county has bought and torn down five hotels that weren’t being used much since 2022: the Airways Motel, Executive Inn, Super Inn, Red Roof Inn, and Knights Inn. This has cleared more than 17 acres of land near the busy intersection of Fulton Industrial Boulevard and Interstate 20 for new development. The plan has been to get rid of crime and blight while getting the corridor ready for renewed economic activity.

Fulton Industrial is already a huge place, with over 55 million square feet of commercial space and about 26,000 employment. It is the largest industrial facility in metro Atlanta and one of the largest in the country. County administrators want to make the area more competitive for advanced manufacturing, logistical operations, and firms that focus on innovation through Renew the District.

The project goes beyond tearing down buildings. Public investments include more than $40 million for a new 50,000-square-foot Fulton County Animal Services building, more than $11 million for a consolidated Public Safety Training Center, and more than $3 million for a new Fire Rescue Station at the Fulton County Executive Airport. Along with more than $10 million for buying and tearing down run-down properties, there are also airport improvements worth more than $40 million going on.

Officials stressed that these concerted initiatives are meant to update infrastructure, improve safety, and make places that can draw in big enterprises. County leaders say they will keep working with public and private partners to promote the newly acquired area and start the next phase of expansion for the corridor now that the last hotel has been cleared.
