Survey: Single women are more successful than single men in Georgia when it comes to owning a home

Georgia – On average, women earn less money than men. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that women make 83% of what men make every week.

Single women own more homes than single men, and the gap is widening

Even though women often have less money than men, they tend to own homes more often. According to a study by LendingTree, which looked at U.S. Census Bureau data, single women living alone own homes in 47 out of 50 states more than single men living alone. The research also shows that single women have 2.71 million more homes than single men do.

The trend is growing: more single women are buying homes and becoming homeowners. LendingTree’s analysis of 2022 data from the U.S. Census Bureau on homeownership in the U.S. reveals that in most states, single women are leading over single men in home ownership.

Georgia is on the 13th position on the list nationally

Georgia and Vermont are both ranked 13th in the U.S. for home ownership among single women, as per the 2022 data from the U.S. Census Bureau analyzed by Lending Tree.

In Georgia, 13.12% of all homeowners are single women, which is 4% more than the single men homeowners at 9.12%. Out of over 2 million homeowners in Georgia in 2022, 353,196 were single women and 245,424 were single men.

Nationally, the research discovered that single women owned a total of 2.71 million more homes than single men in 2022. There were 10.9 million homes owned by single women, compared to 8.2 million owned by single men, as reported by Lending Tree.

Highest number of homes owned by single women and single men – comparison

Delaware, Louisiana, and Mississippi lead the U.S. in the percentage of homes owned by single women, based on Lending Tree’s findings. On the other hand, New Mexico, North Dakota, and Alaska have the highest numbers of homes owned by single men.

The biggest difference between the number of homes owned by single men and women is seen in Delaware, Maryland, and Massachusetts.

However, Alaska, North Dakota, and South Dakota stand out as the only states where single men own more homes than single women, according to the research by Lending Tree.

Key findings

  • Across the U.S., single women own 2.71 million more homes than single men. Single women own 10.95 million homes, while single men own 8.24 million. Put another way, single women own an average of 12.93% of the owner-occupied homes across the 50 states, versus 10.22% among single men.
  • The homeownership gender gap has increased slightly since 2021. Single women owned 10.76 million homes across the U.S. in 2021, while men owned 8.12 million — a difference of 2.64 million. This means that the 2022 gap of 2.71 million is 70,000 homes higher than in 2021.
  • Delaware, with the highest share of homes owned by single women, has the largest homeownership gap. 15.34% of owner-occupied households in the state are owned by single women — 5.89 percentage points higher than the share of homes owned by single men.
  • After Delaware, Louisiana and Mississippi have the highest single-women homeownership rates. In the two states, 15.19% and 14.84% of owner-occupied households are owned by women who live by themselves. For comparison, single men own 10.71% and 10.85% of owner-occupied households in the same states.
  • The homeownership rate is highest among single men in New Mexico, North Dakota and Alaska. In these states, single men own 12.85%, 12.74% and 12.44% of all owner-occupied housing units.
  • Alaska, North Dakota and South Dakota are the only states where single men own a higher share of homes than single women. In Alaska, the share of homes owned and occupied by single men is 2.16 percentage points higher than the share of homes owned by single women. In North Dakota and South Dakota, the differences are 2.08 percentage points and 0.68 percentage points.
