Atlanta, Georgia – The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) revealed an ambitious plan for transit-oriented development (TOD) on Saturday. This appear to be a step towards changing the area around the Indian Creek MARTA stop. The project aims to turn the station into a busy, walkable neighborhood by focusing on ecology and easy access.
With the spotlight on building communities around public transportation hubs, TOD seeks to create a space where people can live, work, and play all within a short walk of public transportation. As a way to realize this goal, MARTA’s plan for the Indian Creek station includes a mixed-use development with homes, green spaces, and shops spread out over 30 acres around the station.
Collie Greenwood, General Manager and CEO of MARTA, explained how these kinds of developments could be life-changing.
“Development at and around our rail stations connects people to opportunity, drives sustainable community development, and promotes regional prosperity,” Greenwood stated as reported by Atlanta News First.
He also said that these changes aren’t just meant to make the area look better; they’re also meant to get more people to use MARTA and make the whole customer experience better.
MARTA wants to add TODs all over its network, and the Indian Creek project is a part of that plan. Similar projects are in the pipeline for the Kensington and Bankhead stations, signaling a significant shift towards creating more integrated, transit-centric communities across the region.
